Denise Goldsworthy: Managing Director Dampier Salt Limited and HIsmelt®
As Managing Director of two of Rio Tinto’s subsidiary companies, Dampier Salt Limited (DSL) and HIsmelt, Denise is responsible for more than 500 employees and a large global customer base.
Since Denise’s appointment to DSL, the world’s leading exporter of solar salt, record earnings of US$129 million was posted in 2009. In her role as MD of HIsmelt, she is responsible for the marketing of HIsmelt iron-making technology.
Denise attributes her success to her style of leading and motivating her management team. In 2009 she challenged them with a motivational campaign designed to get them thinking about ways to increase salt capacity. Denise’s innovative Sustainable Health and Safety programme has also ensured significant improvement in all injury rates.
Denise has held a number of senior positions within Rio Tinto’s minerals group including Vice President, Operations, Rio Tinto Minerals – Asia Pacific (2006-2008) accountable for operational performance delivery in the Group’s solar salt, gypsum and talc businesses in Western Australia and Japan; and General Manager, Salt Operations (2003-2006) accountable for operations, engineering, HSE and human resources aspects of the salt business.
Before joining Rio Tinto Minerals, Denise spent five years in a series of senior roles with Rio Tinto’s iron ore business, including marketing, strategic planning, operations and engineering management, and feasibility studies management.
Prior to Rio Tinto, Denise’s earlier career included seventeen years with BHP Steel working in a number of areas including sinter plant, blast furnace and steelmaking at the Newcastle Steelworks.
Denise holds a Metallurgy degree (BMet Hons and University Medal) from the University of Newcastle in New South Wales.
Jason Waller CSC, General Manager Capital Planning and Programs at QR National
Jason Waller was born in Perth and joined the Air Force in 1987. He completed a Bachelor of Science at ADFA before commencing Pilots Course. He graduated in May 1992 and was posted to fly P3-C Orions with 10 Squadron.
After a tour at the squadron, he completed Flying Instructors Course and was posted to No 2 Flying Training School.After two years as a Qualified Flying Instructor he was promoted to Squadron Leader and became a flight commander, followed by Chief Flying Instructor.
In 2001, he was posted to Canberra and employed in the Aviation Capability Improvement Team under the Chief of the Defence Force. The team’s role was to implement a wide range of recommendations aimed at improving ADF aviation capability an
d developing a new strategic management framework. He graduated from Australian Command and Staff College in 2002, where he was awarded prizes for the Highest Overall Academic Achievement and best Aerospace Paper. Following Staff College, he served as a planning and operations officer in the Defence Department’s Strategic Headquarters and was promoted to Wing Commander.
In 2004 he returned to 92 Wing in No 11 Squadron. During this period he served in the Middle East as the Commander of the Maritime Patrol Task Group conducting operations in Iraq. In the 2009 Australia Day Honours List he was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross for his contribution to AirForce’s pilot training capability.
He is currently the General Manager Capital Planning and Programs for QR National, where is responsible for delivering $400 million of capital projects to support growth of the Iron Ore business.
Jeffrey May, Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers
Jeffrey is a tax partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Perth and has over 25 years of experience. Jeff has worked in the Melbourne, Hong Kong and Perth offices of PwC and specialises in banking, property and funds management. Jeff recently relocated to Perth to lead PwC’s tax and legal practice in WA and increase our focus on the mid cap mining sector and our capability on complex transactions and projects.
Alison Morley, CEO at Brumby Resources
Alison Morley is CEO of ASX-listed Brumby Resources, a resources junior exploring for manganese and base metals in WA and NT. Alison began her career working underground as a mine geologist, before a stint in consultancy where she worked on mineral deposits all over the world.
